Quick Answer

Where is snowfall in Uttarakhand and when does it start?

Main snowfall destinations in Uttarakhand: Auli (2,519 m) — most reliable, ski-grade snow December–March, peak January–February. Chopta (2,680 m) — first snow from November, road requires SUV with chains. Mussoorie (2,005 m) — closest to Dehradun (35 km), snow most likely in January but not guaranteed every year. Dhanaulti (2,286 m) — gets snow before Mussoorie, less crowded. Nainital (2,084 m) — light snow possible January, not consistent. For all snowfall destinations except Rishikesh and Haridwar, an SUV (Innova Crysta or Ertiga) with snow chains is required during active snowfall — Sedans are not safe on icy mountain roads.

Most reliable snow: Auli — every January–February without exception

Nearest to Dehradun: Mussoorie (35 km) — snow most likely January

Earliest snow: Chopta — from November, SUV + chains required

Snow season starts: High altitude (Chopta/Auli): October–December · Mussoorie: January

Vehicle required: SUV with chains for all snow routes — no Sedans

Sedan safe routes: Rishikesh and Haridwar only — no snow at low altitude

From Dehradun

₹7,000 Sedan from Dehradun

Snow Months

January (possible, not guaranteed)

The One Rule

Sedan vs SUV in Snow

This is the most common planning mistake on winter trips in Uttarakhand.

Sedan in Snow — Do Not Book

Standard Sedan taxis (Swift Dzire, Etios, Amaze) have rear-wheel drive and low ground clearance. On icy mountain roads — Rajpur Road to Mussoorie, Chopta access road, Joshimath–Auli — they lose traction and cannot safely ascend or descend.

No chains can be fitted to standard Sedan tyres
Cannot ascend icy switchbacks
Risks getting stranded on narrow roads
We will not operate Sedans in active snowfall

Innova Crysta — Book This

The Innova Crysta is the correct vehicle for all Uttarakhand snow routes. Higher ground clearance, chain-compatible tyres, and the 2.8L diesel engine that handles snow-grade gradients. Our Innova fleet carries chains as standard equipment on all winter mountain bookings.

Chain-compatible tyres fitted before departure
7-seat capacity for family plus ski/snow gear
Higher clearance handles slush and light snowpack
Same driver waits if road temporarily closes

Snowfall FAQs

The main snowfall destinations in Uttarakhand are Auli (2,519 m), Chopta (2,680 m), Mussoorie (2,005 m), Dhanaulti (2,286 m), and occasionally Nainital (2,084 m). Auli receives the most reliable, ski-grade snow from December through March. Chopta gets snow from November but road access requires an experienced driver with chains. Mussoorie is the closest snowfall destination to Dehradun (35 km) — January is the most likely month but snow is not guaranteed every year.
