About Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,352–3,658 metres. Spread across 87 square kilometres inside the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, the valley is home to over 500 species of wildflowers including the rare Blue Poppy, Brahmakamal, Cobra Lily, and Himalayan Bellflower. The trek is rated easy to moderate and is one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in India.

The valley was unknown to the outside world until 1931, when British mountaineer Frank Smythe stumbled upon it after losing his way on a descent from Kamet. Today, it draws botanists, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world during its brief July–October window.

Important Information

A forest entry permit is mandatory at Govindghat. Fee: ₹150/day (Indian nationals), ₹600/day (foreigners). Carry Aadhaar card or passport. No vehicles are allowed beyond Govindghat — horses and porters are available for hire. Plastic bags are banned inside the national park.

Driver's Insider Tips
  • Leave Dehradun by 4:00 AM to reach Govindghat by 2:00-3:00 PM, giving you time to start the trek to Ghangaria before dark. Never start the 14 km trek after 3:00 PM.
  • Withdraw sufficient cash in Joshimath — there are no ATMs between Joshimath and Ghangaria. You will need cash for accommodation, food, horses, and porters at Ghangaria.
  • A forest entry permit is mandatory at Govindghat. Indian nationals pay ₹150 per day; foreign nationals pay ₹600 per day. Carry your Aadhaar/passport for verification.
  • Uttarakhand Cab 24/7 can arrange a multi-day package with driver waiting at Govindghat or Joshimath for 2-4 days while you complete the trek and return.
  • Mobile network effectively ends at Govindghat — there is no reliable coverage in Ghangaria or inside the Valley of Flowers itself. Tell family your full plan and expected return day before you head up.
  • This trek only makes sense in monsoon (June–September, when the flowers actually bloom), so pack accordingly: a proper rain shell, quick-dry layers, and leech-resistant socks — the trail is genuinely wet and leeches are common in July-August.
